“I feel so lonely. Everyone around me is in a relationship, going on dates, getting married, making love, and I want that. I’m ready for that.”
“I’m sorry. Ness will be ready for that someday. And when she is, you’ll know. Edward may try to kill you once you act on it. I’ll have to stop him, I’m sure. After all, I can’t have the object of my daughter’s affection dying.”
“Edward couldn’t kill me.”
“He would try.”
“He might try, but if we fought, he wouldn’t win.”
“He can read minds you know,” she said softly. The words spoken could have been meant to continue the conversation, but they didn’t. She had suddenly changed the topic, and they were both hyper aware of it.
“I know,” he said, sighing. He slouched down, crossing his ankles in front of himself while encroaching upon Bella’s space. She pulled her legs up and curled them under her. She watched Jacob’s eyes as he followed the movements of her hands when she wrapped her legs with the fabric of her robe.
“What are you going to do?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?”
“I’m going to pretend it away, like I always do. Because that’s what you want. It’s what you’ve always wanted. To pretend that this,” he said, motioning between the two of them, “is platonic.”
“It is,” she said quietly.
He nodded his head and then spoke up against his better judgment. He was tired, so tired. “Don’t worry. I’ll control my thoughts when he’s around. If it gets too bad, I’ll just make myself scarce.”
“But Ness…”
“Ness is fine and you know it. And she will continue to be fine. You’re fine. Edward’s fine. The only one not fine in this situation is me.”
“Jake, I…”
“You know why he can’t read your mind?”
Bella shook her head from side to side.
“Because he’d probably want to kill us both if he knew half of the things you thought about me. About us.” She didn’t deny it. She couldn’t, and Jacob knew it.

“You’ve been telling me all week to leave her alone!” Jacob exploded.
“I told you once on Wednesday.”
“That was only two days ago!”
“It was a bad idea two days ago. Now you need to get your ass over there and be a man.”
What was it about the second X chromosome that made women insane? First, she was all, ‘If you go over to Bella’s house, I will personally make a milkshake out of your testicles.’ And now she was like, ‘You need to get your ass over there and be a man.’
Bullshit! Unless…
“This is some sort of reverse psychology stunt, isn’t it?” Jacob accused. “You’re telling me to go just because you know that I know that you would try to set me up for failure or that I wouldn’t take your advice just to spite you, which I was totally thinking about, and you knew it.” When there was silence on the other end of the line, and he smirked triumphantly. Oh, yeah. She was totally trying to get him not to go. “Well, I’m not falling for it. I’m going to go see Bella right now.”
“Darn. You’re just too smart for me.”
And then she hung up.
