He wiped his hands on a dirty rag and looked up at her finally, but he wasn’t smiling. In fact, he looked a bit angry. “What are you doing here?” he asked, his tone confirming her theory.
“I was getting some advice from the aunties about boys.”
Jacob didn’t respond. He turned his back on Bella and began sorting tools, returning them to their place in the garage.
“Apparently, Ness is kissing boys now. Or rather a boy, to be precise.”
He didn’t say anything and continued working.
“You want to talk about it?” she hedged.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“I know it’s kind of weird as you’re my friend and she’s my daughter, but . . .”
“Your friend? Mm hm,” he scoffed, then laughed out loud.
“What?” she asked, feeling a bit irritated with him now.
“You don’t know anything about your daughter, do you?”
“I know she cares about you.”
“Yep, she does, and so do you.”
“Not this again.”
“Yes, this again. Always this again if you insist on seeking me out.”
“We can’t do this here, and I’m not seeking you out,” said Bella quietly.
“Really? Then I’ll ask it again, why are you here, Bella? Because you’re clearly done talking to Alice and Rosalie, and I’m the only one in here. So, it seems to me, you’re seeking me out. What I don’t understand, is why?”
“I just wanted to say hey; to be polite.” She wrung her hands together in front of her. The action felt awkward as she normally didn’t fidget, but she sure as hell was fidgeting now. She couldn’t help it due to the way Jacob was talking to her and the way he was looking at her: like he hated her, like he wanted her to just go away and disappear.
“To be polite. You know what would be polite? I’ll tell you. You leaving me alone would be polite.”
“Fine. I’ll leave you alone.”
